The Current State of Maternal Health in Balochistan
Maternal health challenges in Balochistan- the largest province in Pakistan by geographical size, are as diverse as they are numerous. It irks me so much because this region has some cultural values and diversity in ethnic groups, but the status of maternal health shows something different. Increased maternal mortality and expanded facility delivery point to a need for intervention and policies that will close the gap.
Challenges Faced by Expecting Mothers
An amalgamation of various factors has caused the degraded maternal health situation of this province, out of which some are as follows. Majorly, insulation from population density is evident; many rural areas constrain themselves with inadequate healthcare infrastructure. Furthermore, assessment of women's lives enhances realizes that cultural beliefs and traditional practices deny women required medical services. Factors that worsen these problems include infrastructural problems, shortage of healthcare workers, and funding by the government.
Efforts to Improve Maternal Health
Over the last decade or so, the provincial government, with the support of different NGOs and international organizations, has launched several programs that address these problems. Such preparatory care is being tasked to the community health workers for implementation at the grassroots level. These efforts are directed at helping expectant mothers and their families improve their knowledge and use of prenatal and postnatal care. Also, there are efforts to enhance the quality and supply of healthcare services that pregnant women should receive.
However, eradicating the entrenched socio-economic factors is still a chance for any serious contender to overcome. There is a need for educational campaigns that encourage the community to seek maternal healthcare services. Families should be encouraged and encouraged to follow the recommended health advice and care schemes to attain better conditions – it begins with women.
Thus, despite the low status of maternal health in Balochistan, activity and awareness can provide the basis for major positive transformations. It is, therefore, necessary for the government, NGOs, and other stakeholders to integrate efforts to ensure that maternal health becomes a focal area of development in this province. These efforts will go a long way in ensuring that mothers and their children in this diverse province lead healthier lives.
